This helps the fragile marine ecosystems of the Mesoamerican Reef system, particularly, coral reefs, sea grass beds, mangrove forests, and related coastal environments.

The standard mentioned above addresses four critical areas:

- Minimizing the impact to the marine environment, particularly to coral reefs, sea grass beds and related coastal environments;

- Offering minimum requirements for doing guided snorkeling and providing equipment to independent snorkelers; and
- Implementing operational safety practices and emergency equipment.
